Bupleurum Root in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is thought to spread Liver Qi, or energy, supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes. In generally healthy people, it is used to break up Liver Qi stagnation which can cause emotional instability, irritation, menstrual problems, dizziness, vertigo, and chest and flank pain. These symptoms are often caused by significant external stress or an excessive lifestyle (think: too much food and alcohol). The latter also typically leads to a disharmony between the Liver and Spleen (digestive issues) with epigastric and flank pain, a stifling sensation in the chest, abdominal bloating, nausea, and indigestion—which Bupleurum Root is used to treat.

Bupleurum Root also can be used to treat “external” conditions, like getting sick and not treating it correctly. It harmonizes something called the Shao Yang, which is the center point between the “interior” and “exterior” of the body. It’s a very harmonizing herb. It is not used to strengthen Qi, but to smooth and balance its flow through the body.
